Bio
Catherine Sollman is a printmaker, painter, and teaching artist whose small-scale works on paper emphasize geometry and color play. A Wisconsin native and graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she lives and works on Chicago’s West Side. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States including Highpoint Center for Printmaking (Minneapolis, MN), Mixografia (Los Angeles, CA), Print Austin (Austin, TX), Moreau Gallery at St. Mary’s College (Notre Dame, IN), and Anonymous Society (Redding, CT), as well as a 2025 solo exhibition, “Gut Symmetry,” at OS Projects in Racine, WI. She was a 2026 Artist-in-Residence at PenArt (Fish Creek, WI) and teaches community printmaking classes at the Marshall J. My artistic process is guided by self-imposed rules, using symmetry, geometry, and color to build systems of abstract image-making. I begin with small gouache paintings or monotypes of interacting forms, which evolve into larger monotypes and monoprints. The work is a meditation on old notions of femininity, impropriety, chance, and order. I aim for precision, often minimizing evidence of the free hand. These images depict unreal things and imaginary places, flirting with representation while suggesting the corporeal, the planetary, and the otherworldly.
